History Of Switzerland _ Objective

In the beginning, the territory of Switzerland was divided into 2 parts: Middle Francia and East Francia. Around 1000 AD, these regions were reunited under the Holy Roman Empire. In the Habsburgs dominion, Switzerland extended its territories to the eastern Swiss Plateau in 1264 AD.

Switzerland gained independence in 1499 after the Swabian war. However, the independence of this country was recognized by European Countries in 1648. Switzerland’s growth was not balanced because it had a financial crisis, and it led to war. It happened in 1653.

Civil war broke out in 1847; it made residents in Switzerland understand that they needed to be united with its European Neighbors. In 1850, Switzerland introduced a single currency, the Swiss Franc, and the constitution was revised in 1891.

During World War I, Lenin chose Switzerland as his home and remained until 1917. In 1944-45, there were 3 cities that were bombed.

After World War I & II, Switzerland tried to develop and build relationships with other countries such as:

1. They joined the League of Nations in 1920

2. They extended their relationships by being a member in the council of Europe in 1963

3. They became a full member of the United Nations in 2002
4. A majority of 55% of Swiss’s Voters agreed to join the Schegen Treaty in June 2005.

This country would like to join to the EEA, but they got rejected in December 1992.
