Geography of Switzerland


Switzerland is surrounded by 5 countries:

North : Germany

South : Italy

West : France

East : Austria and Liechtenstein


Switzerland is divided into 26 sovereign cantons. The cantons in the Swiss Plateau are Industrial and Protestant and the cantons in Alps are Agrarian or Tourist and Catholic. Switzerland uses 4 languages, those are: Germany, French, Italian and Roman.



This country is divided into 3 main geographic regions:

The Central Plateau

It extends from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance. In this region, you will find 3 rivers: Rhone, Rhine and Aar.

Swiss Alps

You will find mountains with the tallest point or peak such as Dom, Mattherhorn, Dufourspitze and 2 major valleys such as Ticino and Maggia.

The Jura

The form of Jura looks like a limestone with the range from Lake Geneva to Rhine River. Many Jurassic fossils and tracks were founded in this area. Also, this area has the highest peak; it called as Le Cret de la Neige.
